Colby-Sawyer College

Exercise and Sports Sciences

Colby-Sawyer College is a four year institution of higher learning located in New London, New Hampshire. The college started as the New London Academy when it first opened in 1837 and was one of the only schools in the region that admitted both male and female students equally. To better meet the needs of its growing female population, the college added a new dormitory for those students. Though the college operated for a number of years as a preparatory academy, it officially became a college in the 1920s and created a separate junior college just for female students. It didn’t become Colby-Sawyer College until the 1970s.

B.S. in Sports Management

Students enrolling in the B.S. in Sports Management program at Colby-Sawyer College will find that the school has partnerships with both Plymouth State University and Springfield College. Those partnerships help students gain all the skills and take all the courses necessary for entering one of the graduate programs offered by those two schools. Students choosing this major must also select a concentration in either sport business, sport and recreation, sport studies or sport information and media. Though all students will take some of the same introductory courses on business and management, they will also need to take five or more classes in their concentration area as well. Students also have the option of earning a certificate while in school that allows them to work as coaches across New England and in some other parts of the country. Colby-Sawyer College requires that all sports management students take at least two internships also.

Daniel Webster College

School of Business and Management

Though established in 1963, Daniel Webster College originally opened as the New England Aeronautical Institute and offered courses in engineering and similar technical fields. After merging with a junior college in the city, the campus became DWC. The school faced financial problems in the 2000s that almost led to the school closing its doors, but the parent company behind ITT Tech purchased the school. As part of the agreement behind the sale, the new owners eliminated the flight school program, which led to the college losing more than 100 students. More than 600 students still take classes on its campus.

BS in Sports Management

Though DWC doesn’t offer as many courses or programs as it did in the past, it still has one of the top accredited sports management degree programs in New Hampshire. The BS in Sports Management program requires that students take courses across multiple disciplines, including economics, leadership, law and promotions. When developing its program, the founders wanted to create one that would look at all aspects of business and how it relates to sports. Those founders added a fieldwork component that requires all students gain some experience working in the management field before earning their degrees. Students may work for a local sports complex, with a college team or on the professional level. Sports management students must take 15 semester hours of communications courses and 40 semester hours of general education work in addition to the 33 semester hours of business classes and 36 semester hours of major courses needed for graduation.

Franklin Pierce University

Division of Business Administration

Franklin Pierce College opened in 1963 with just six faculty members and fewer than 100 students. The campus itself consisted of several historic buildings that provided students with places to live and places to take classes. Within a few years of opening, the college began adding new buildings to keep up with the demand in its population rise. That population dropped dramatically in the 1970s as the college could no longer keep up with demand, but it later added a number of new buildings and increased its campus. Now known as Franklin Pierce University, it has a population of more than 2,200 graduate and undergraduate students.

Sports and Recreation Management, BS

Franklin Pierce University introduced its Sports and Recreation Management, BS program as a way for students to earn the fundamentals and begin work right after leaving college. The program also prepares students for the advanced topics they will cover in the graduate program offered by the university or a sport management graduate program at another college. Students have the chance to conduct research into professional management at Fenway Park and other local sports attractions, and many professors require that students visit local facilities to gain some hands on experience as well. Like many of the top accredited sports management degree programs in New Hampshire, FPU gives students the option to take an internship during their later years. Though there is no thesis component associated with the program, students will need to do some research in their upper level courses and write extensive papers that cover topics relating to sports or recreation management.

MBA in Sports Management

One of the more popular graduate programs that FPC offers is its MBA in Sports and Recreation Management. Designed for students who have undergraduate experience in sports management, the program looks at both management concepts and the principles associated with running a leisure or recreation business. The university offers a number of opportunities that let students learn outside of the classroom. Many courses take field trips to local sports facilities, including Fenway Park and Boston Harbor. Other classes ask that students volunteer at a local business or do a team project about a sports business nearby. Students can choose between one of two concentrations after enrolling: recreation management or professional sports management. The professional sports management concentration deals more with advertising and other aspects of managing a major team, while the recreation management concentration focuses more on leisure facilities associated with amateur sports.`

New England College

Management Division

The United States government created the G.I. Bill as a way to help soldiers returning from World War II attend college. New Hampshire had a large number of returning soldiers and a lack of colleges, which led to the foundation of New England College. The college initially had a separate college in England that offered study abroad opportunities for students, but the school later closed that program and campus due to a lack of interest. Though NEC is fairly small, it offers more than 40 degree programs and has a population of more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Recreation Management

Students hoping to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Recreation Management degree from New England College must complete three separate areas of study. As with all colleges in New Hampshire, NEC requires that all students take general education courses on life sciences, math, social sciences, communications and other topics. Students will also need to take two elective courses in the sport or recreation management field. Some of the electives available include fitness for wellness, non-profit management and sport and adventure tourism. The core of the program is a series of 12 classes required of all graduates. Those courses include some that are only worth one or two credits, including a CPR certification course and a class on managing special events. Other required courses include legal issues in sport and recreation management, principles of marketing, recreation facilities management and a seminar that asks students to write a paper or complete a special project.

Plymouth State University

College of Business Administration

Though originally established in 1871, Plymouth State University initially opened as the Plymouth Normal School. Normal schools were teaching colleges that awarded graduates a diploma and assisted them in finding teaching positions. After becoming a teaching college, it added new programs that led to the campus later becoming a state college. Due to its program offerings and other factors, the school officially became a state university, which led to its enrollment rate rising to more than 6,500 students. Famous alumni include writers, professional athletes, politicians and even a former Miss USA contestant.

Bachelor of Science in Sports Management

The Bachelor of Science in Sports Management program at Plymouth State University consists of 120 credit hours of work that students complete over four years. New students will meet with an adviser to go over what courses they need to take each year and to keep them on track. A minimum of 33 credit hours of work comes from the general education requirements of the program, including English and life science courses. Students must also take at least 18 credit hours of electives, which can include courses in or out of the business department. There are also 17 required classes that all sports management students must take, including sports law, sports marketing, information technology, financial accounting and principles of marketing. Students will also need to take a practicum or an internship. The practicum lets them gain additional research and writing skills, while an internship lets them work in the field at a local stadium, marking company or recreation business.

Southern New Hampshire University

Southern New Hampshire University opened as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science in 1932 and operated under that name for nearly three decades before becoming the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce. Though it went through several name changes before eventually becoming SNHU, it remained committed to offering its students math, science and business courses. SNHU grew after taking over some of the programs and students when a local college closed and with operating an online university. With more than 31,000 students enrolled in its online and campus programs, it is one of the state’s largest schools.

Sports Management, B.S.

Though Southern New Hampshire University offers several sports management programs, one of its top is its Sports Management, B.S. program. This unique program includes components of business, marketing, economics and similar topics with a focus on the sports world. After taking and completing their general education requirements, students can take introductory and advanced courses on business topics and principles. Students must take an introduction to sports management class and classes on marketing, ethics and general management principles before taking the higher level sports management classes. Southern New Hampshire University also offers some unique courses that are not available on other campuses in the state, including front office management, sports licensing, fitness management and golf course management. Before graduating from the SNHU program, students must also take a practicum. These course will cover a different specialized topic relating to sports management every semester.

MS in Sports Management

Of the two graduate programs in sports management that Southern New Hampshire University offers, its MS in Sports Management is the more general of the two. While it still looks at in depth management topics, the program focuses more on the general side of management. Students can take additional classes that let them earn certification in either athletic administration or international sport management. The program itself consists of six key classes, two to three electives, two seminars and an internship. SNHU will work with students to help them find and secure internships, but students can also seek out internships on their own. Students will find out the topic covered in each seminar before the university offers a seminar, and they will write an extensive paper in that seminar.

MBA in Sports Management

Students interested more in the business side of sports management can enroll in the MBA in Sport Management program offered by Southern New Hampshire University. This program is open to anyone who has a bachelor’s degree in a business field or have experience in business. This program includes multiple business and management courses that include business economics, marketing, accounting, ethics and operations management. They will also take three sport management courses that include management of sport operations and sport and society. This program requires that students take a capstone course, which helps them develop better research skills and improve their writing capabilities. This MBA program is available on campus and online.
