Husson University
College of Business
Despite its relatively small student body, which barely numbers more than 3,000 people in both undergraduate and graduate programs, Husson University stands out as having the largest “footprint” of any Maine school. The university maintains its primary campus in the Bangor area, but has several campuses throughout the rest of the state that all rank highly for their individualized attention, top-notch faculty, and wide range of majors. In the sports management program, students are able to take advantage of a doctoral faculty, unique on-campus labs and fitness facilities, and a great number of internship opportunities throughout Maine and the rest of New England.
B.S. Sport Management
Husson’s sport management degree program is unique among the options in Maine for taking five full years to complete, instead of the traditional four years that most undergraduate programs require. In addition to a strong, management-oriented curriculum, students will study sports law, sports administration, talent scouting and talent management, and professional ethics in the industry. As an added benefit of the program, students will complete the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s course and skill requirements to earn the organization’s Certified Athletic administration and Registered Athletic Administrator certifications prior to graduation.

Thomas College
Sport Management
Thomas College is home to just 1,200 undergraduates, but its sports management program is highly regarded and is easily its top draw in the New England region. Thomas College’s sports management degree gives students access to several exclusive internships and networking opportunities, and has long been an innovator in creating new courses that teach the latest trends and innovations in athletics and athletic management. The school has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a “best buy,” primarily for its combination of excellent opportunities and affordable tuition. A strong internship program, thanks to the school’s strong program in sports management, is also a highlight for many students at Thomas College.
Sport Management B.S.
The Thomas College program can be completed in three or four years, depending on how many credits the student wishes to take each semester. Summer course options are also offered. This program offers several interesting concentrations, including athletic program leadership, event management, retailing, team management, and sports journalism. Each concentration requires its own 18 credits of specialized coursework, while the program itself will focus on the broad topics of sports recruiting, organizational management, athletic administration, sports law, collegiate athletics, health and nutrition, and typical business classes in areas like marketing, accounting, finance, and marketing. During their third or fourth year in the program, students can arrange internships with the likes of the Philadelphia 76ers, New England Patriots, and other major franchises in the region.

University of New England
College of Arts and Sciences
Originally founded as a boys-only junior college, the University of New England has grown into one of the leading independent colleges for students throughout Maine and New England itself. The school’s sports management degree is a bit unique, with a focus on both sports management and recreation management. In the classroom, students interact with doctoral professors, practitioners, and graduate assistants, and typically enjoy small class sizes that larger schools don’t offer. Bachelor of Science in Sport and Recreation Management
The B.S. in Sport and Recreation Management at the University of New England is split into two tracks. The first track is a traditional sport management option, while a second track in outdoor recreation management focuses more on managing parks and outdoor recreation areas instead of professional and collegiate sports organizations. Students in this program must take a significant business core, inclusive of classes in marketing, management, accounting, finance, and economics. Alongside this core, students focus on their concentration as well as various courses in sports management, sports marketing, talent management, recruiting, organizational leadership, and interpersonal communication. An internship, required in the final year of the program, can be arranged with local sports organizations and professional teams in New England.

At the University of Southern Maine, students must complete the university core, the non-business core, and the business core, alongside their major and concentration requirements.
