University of Scranton appears in our ranking of the 50 Best Bachelor’s in Sports Science Degree Programs (Campus).
In the $47.5 million Edward Leahy Hall, the Panuska College of Professional Studies grants the Kinesiology BS for University of Scranton undergrads intrigued by the biological processes of movement in athletic exercises. Chaired by Dr. Paul T. Cutrufello, the 120.5-credit degree builds atop Jesuit values with three customized tracks: Applied Kinesiology, Pre-Health, or Pre-Physical Therapy. Daytime courses, such as Strength Training or Sport Psychology, have a 12:1 student-professor ratio for engaged ACSM certification prep and an optional Coaching Minor. Additionally, the Kania School offers the Management BS in Brennan Hall to further 21st-century organizational leadership skills. Directed by Dr. Satya Chattopadhyay, this 120-credit, AACSB-accredited sequence caps classes like Sport Marketing at 35 in two tracks: Management of Structure & Systems or Management of People & Teams.
Some continue into the Online MBA in Operational Management for 36 credits of Blackboard courses and connections to a strong 45,000 alumni network. Scranton’s close proximity to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Wilkes-Barre Penguins, Electric City Shock SC, and others, plus 19 NCAA Division III Landmark teams, make it ideal for internships.
About the University of Scranton
The University of Scranton originated in August 1888 when Bishop Rev. William O’Hara of St. Peter’s Cathedral started constructing Old Main for St. Thomas College on Wyoming Avenue. In Fall 1892, Rev. John Mangan welcomed an inaugural class of 62 men paying just $40 each. Originally managed by the Xaverian Brothers, it transferred to the Lasallian Christian Brothers in 1897. Forty-one years later, the University of Scranton name was adopted to broaden Catholic education and admit women. In 1942, Most Rev. William Hafey invited the Society of Jesus to make Scranton a Jesuit college. That Summer, its 58-acre Lower Hill Section campus in Pennsylvania’s sixth-largest city was acquired. Dedicated to “Cura Personalis,” the Arthur J. Kania School of Management became named for the 1953 alumnus in 1978 and globally accredited in 1996. Budgeting $231.37 million, the University of Scranton now enrolls 5,286 Royals from 25 countries with 207 tenured faculty for 88 percent retention.
The U.S. News & World Report ranked Scranton the sixth best Northern university, 27th top value, and 11th most innovative college with the 108th best online MBA nationally. On Niche, Scranton boasts America’s 45th best kinesiology program, 52nd best dorms, 94th top campus experience, and 130th most valuable tuition. Times Higher Education placed the University of Scranton 217th overall. Forbes deemed Scranton the 174th best private institution with the Northeast’s 104th top degrees. The Princeton Review noticed Scranton for the 16th best research facilities and 15th best dining. College Factual honored Scranton with the 16th top Catholic education, 100th best management degree, and 102nd best fitness studies. PayScale recorded the 236th highest mid-career wage of $105,800 for University of Scranton alumni. Entrepreneur magazine featured the Kania School of Management in the country’s top 15. Greatist.com also named Scranton the 25th healthiest college.
University of Scranton Accreditation Details
On November 20, 2014, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) removed the Standard 14 warning and reaffirmed the University of Scranton’s Level V accreditation for the maximum 10-year timeline under its 27th president, Rev. Scott Pilarz, who received the 2009 John Carroll Award of Excellence. Located 133 miles south via Interstate 380 in Philly, this six-state NYC Metro accreditor meets U.S. Education Department guidelines to evaluate Scranton’s 68 baccalaureate, 21 master’s, and two doctoral offerings. Specifically, the Management BS and Online MBA were accredited by the elite Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) on March 23, 2016. The 15-credit Coaching Minor also adheres to the American Sport Education Program (ASEP).
University of Scranton Application Requirements
Starting at the University of Scranton is considered “moderately difficult” on Peterson’s because 7,580 of the 10,002 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for 76 percent acceptance. First-year Royals ascending to the Kinesiology BS must graduate from approved high schools or earn the Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD). The Class of 2021 submitted a competitive median GPA of 3.40. On the 100 scale, averages of 88 percent and above are preferred. Most score at least 24 on the ACT or 1130 on the SAT. Testing waivers are available for freshmen ranking in the top one-third with minimum 3.2 GPAs. Welcomed Management BS transfers need cumulative 2.5 GPAs or better during 12+ attempted college credits. Note the Honors Program directed by Dr. Andrew LaZella only admits sophomores exceeding the Cum Laude mark of 3.5. Advancing into the Campus or Online MBA in Operations Management requires a 120-credit bachelor’s in any major. Priority is given to post-grads with two or more years of work experience. Currently, Scranton’s 162 MBA candidates boast a mean 3.1 GPA. The CAS/MBA Five-Year Program mandates that seniors pass the GMAT with 550 or greater.
The University of Scranton set non-binding freshman deadlines of November 15th for Early Action and December 15th for Regular Decision. Kinesiology BS transfer admission has preferred deadlines of August 1st for Fall and December 15th for Spring entry. The Arthur J. Kania School of Management has rolling MBA reviews year-round though. Interested students submit the Common Application or GradApply Form online for free. Official transcripts get mailed to The Estate at 800 Linden Street in Scranton, PA 18510. Standardized exams are reported using the 2929 College Board and 3736 ACT code electronically. Supplemental materials might include the guidance counselor report, teacher evaluation, extracurricular activities list, proof of residency card, and confirmation of financial resources. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, the University of Scranton is billing full-time Kinesiology BS majors $22,066 per term or $44,132 annually. Excess credits cost $1,132 apiece. Nontraditional part-time undergrads pay $913 per credit. Summer Session courses are an exception at $597 per credit. Mandated expenses include the $200 university fee, $65 health services fee, and $30 experiential learning fee. Living at the Lackawanna County campus’ dorms like Redington Hall adds $4,388 to $5,101 for housing. Unlimited meal plans for DeNaples Food Court are $3,103 extra. Scranton budgets $1,300 for texts and $1,868 for miscellaneous. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals $61,096 on-site or $49,178 at home. Online MBA in Operations Management students will spend $965 per credit or $34,740 total.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office in St. Thomas Hall gifts $72.46 million yearly for 86 percent of Scranton Royals to rule median assistance packages of $21,709. University funds include the Loyola Scholarship, Arrupe Scholarship, Faber Award, Alperin Family Scholarship, Anne Bednar Scholarship, Edward Bartley Scholarship, Claver Award, Margaret Briggs Foundation Scholarship, Chorba-Mezick Family Scholarship, Judith Doyle Scholarship, Denis Dubbels Memorial Scholarship, Educational Freedom Scholarship, Jethro Scholarship, and Martin Mattei Memorial Scholarship. Meritorious Kinesiology BS with minimum 3.9 GPAs could earn full-tuition Presidential Scholarships. Phi Epsilon Kappa members apply for scholarships until February 28th. Filing FAFSA forms coded 003384 determines Federal Pell and FSEOG Grant monies. The Pennsylvania State Grant offers $2,286 to $4,054 yearly based on local household incomes. Biweekly paychecks are disbursed for 20-hour Federal Work-Study jobs. Money magazine also ranked Scranton 191st with an average debt of $27,000 from Federal Direct Stafford, Graduate Plus, and alternative loans.
