About Southwest Minnesota State University
Founded in 1964 as Southwest Minnesota State College, the school admitted its first class in 1967. For more than 30 years, starting in 1975, the school was known as Southwest State University. The name changed to Southwest Minnesota State University in 2003.

Southwest Minnesota State University Application Requirements
In order to apply for the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, applicants must provide official high school transcripts along with ACT or SAT scores. They must rank in the upper half of their graduating class or must have scored a composite of 21 or above on the ACT or 990 on the SAT.
Applicants to the Master of Science in Education Sports Leadership Emphasis must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Two letters of recommendation and a personal statement must also be submitted.
Southwest Minnesota State University Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition at Southwest Minnesota State University is $295.61 per credit hour while graduate tuition is $459.86 per credit hour.
The Financial Aid Office at Southwest Minnesota State University provides fair, equitable and unbiased service to students who may need assistance paying for college. The Office coordinates all federal, state and institutional assistance, including grants, scholarships, student employment and student loans. In order to be eligible for financial aid, all students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the form must be renewed on an annual basis. All students should complete the FAFSA regardless of income as some assistance is merit-based rather than need-based.
Southwest Minnesota State University offers the “Mustang Promise.” Under this program, students who are not employed or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation may enroll in one of the school’s graduate programs with the first semester tuition paid by the University. Through this program, students work with a faculty advisor and Career Services staff to take steps that have been proven to lead to success. If the student does what they are supposed to do based on the advice of the faculty advisor and Career Services, but are still unable to find employment, the first semester of graduate school at Southwest Minnesota State University is free.
