Founded in 1868, Minnesota State University, Mankato started off as the Mankato Normal School – serving just twenty-seven pupils. As the years passed, the school underwent a series of changes; slowly morphing into the school that it is today. In 1998, the University changed its name to Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Minnesota State University, Mankato Accreditation Details
Minnesota State University has maintained accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission since the early 1900’s. The Higher Learning Commission is the accrediting body for all higher learning institutions throughout the North Central part of the country. Reviews are conducted on a ten-year basis. Minnesota State University, Mankato is due for review on March 28-29th, 2016.
Some of the university’s programs are independently accredited through different national organizations, as well.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Application Requirements
For admission into Minnesota State University, incoming high school students must rank in the top 50 percent of their graduating class, have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and submit an ACT score of at least a 21 for consideration.
Applicants who do not meet those requirements will still be considered, but will be judged based on academic merit, previous coursework and the likelihood of success in any given program.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a completed application no less than 5 days prior to that start of semester classes. To be considered, applicants must submit:
- A completed paper or online application
- A $20 application fee
- Official high school transcripts
- Official ACT scores
Transfer students applying for undergraduate admission must provide adequate proof of academic standing by submitting copies of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. Transfer students are encouraged to apply at least 45 days from the start of classes to allow time for adequate processing and placement.
For those interested in applying to one of the university’s graduate degree programs, the application requirements are as follows:
- A completed online application
- A $40 non-refundable application fee
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions – students who previously attended Minnesota State University, Mankato or any other affiliate do not have to submit such transcripts
- An immunization form (although this is not required per the application process, it is required upon acceptance)
Many of the graduate programs do have their own requirements, so students are encouraged to follow-up with their prospective programs for more information. For graduate students interested in applying to the Sports Management program, specifically, the requirements are as follows:
- A completed online application to the College of Graduate Studies and Research
- A completed application to the Human Performance Department – this includes the submission of unofficial transcripts, a statement of interest and an updated copy of your resume
- Three professional or academic letters of recommendation
Since the Sports Management Program is so competitive, students are encouraged to submit their completed applications no later than February 1st for consideration. The earlier the better, as applications are considered on a first come, first serve basis and space in the program is limited.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of tuition at Minnesota State University, Mankato varies depending on a student’s academic status, verification of residency and living situation. For undergraduate Minnesota residents who live on campus, the cost of tuition (per credit) is $271.66. A flat tuition rate of $3,452.29 is charged to students who take more than twelve credits per semester. For undergraduate students who are not Minnesota residents, but still live on-campus, the cost of tuition (per credit) is $584.05. The flat rate for such students taking more than twelve credits is $7,324.15.
For undergraduate students who are Minnesota residents living in the off-campus metro, the cost of tuition (per credit) is $281.95. For non-resident students living in the off-campus metro, the cost of tuition (per credit) is $540.10.
The cost to pursue an online degree is approximately $307.91 per credit for all Minnesota residents. For all undergraduate non-resident students, the cost of tuition is $620.30 per credit. There are non-resident reciprocity rates for undergraduate students who are residents of surrounding states; these fees vary depending upon the location.
Minnesota State University, Mankato strives to provide financial assistance for those in need – offering a number of different financial aid programs to eligible students. Students may apply for a variety of federal loans, grants and scholarships; as well as participate in work study programs to help fund their education. All students are encouraged to submit their financial aid paperwork as soon as possible due to limited funds.

The Sports Management Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato is one of the oldest and most renowned programs of its kind in the Midwest. The curriculum is unlike any other, developed through the combined efforts of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the North American Society for Sport Management.
Students are encouraged to apply their classroom learning directly to the community, engaging in a number of internships that are sure to stimulate, motivate and inspire. Students are able to work with local professional sports teams, well-recognized sports marketing agencies, fitness centers and more. Students in this program are also given the opportunity to participate in the Sports Management Association – an organization where students can network and thrive together.
