Top Five Sports Biographies

 

Playing a sport while you are in school is one way to make sure your time is as enjoyable as it can be. The trick is to find a school that hosts your sport and also has the academic program you are interested in entering. Then, maybe you can become like one of the famous athletes that are listed below.

Arthur Ashe

Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. rose to become the number one tennis player in the world in 1975. He turned pro in 1969, and won 33 career titles. He won the Australian Open in 1970, Wimbeldon in 1975 and the U.S. Open in 1968. He also won two doubles titles. The first was at the Australian Open in 1977, and the second was at the French Open in 1971. Ashe also won titles as part of a team. He won the Davis Cup in 1963, 1968, 1969 and 1970. After his retirement, tennis didn’t leave him behind. The International Tennis Hall of Fame elected him in 1985.

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali is called one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in the world. He won the World Heavyweight Championship in 1964 at the age of 22. He wasn’t expected to win this fight. He went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship three more times in 1964, 1974 and 1978. Unlike most fighters of his day, Ali didn’t like to let others do the talking for him. He often boasted and bragged during press conferences and interviews and spoke his mind about all sorts of topics. Ring Magazine named Muhammad Ali as the number one greatest heavyweight of all time.

Babe Ruth

George Herman Ruth, Jr. was a baseball player who pitched for the Boston Red Sox. He became a sensation after he moved on to play for the New York Yankees. He managed to have 714 home runs and a .690 slugging percentage. Many people believe that Babe Ruth is the greatest player to have ever played the game of baseball. In 1936, he won the honor of being one of the first five players to make it into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. After his retirement from baseball, he hoped to become the manager of a team, but he was unable to secure a position.

Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Douglas Gretzky played the sport of ice hockey and succeeded so well that people nicknamed him “The Great One.” Gretzky played for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League. He currently holds 60 records in the National Hockey League as well as six All-Star Records, 15 playoff records and 40 regular-season records. He retired in 1999 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame that year. He was also inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He is currently one of the owners of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Gail Devers

Yolanda Gail Devers won a spot on the United States Olympic Team three times. Since then, she has been inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. She won the gold medal for the 100 meter hurdles in 1992, a gold medal in 1996 for the 100 meter hurdles and a third gold in 1996 for the 4×100 meter relay. She won the gold medal at the World Championships five times and won the silver medal three times. In 2012, she was inducted into the Untied States Olympic Hall of Fame and received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in 2013.
