Sports Management Programs Available at A.T. Still University

The Athletic Training Department at A.T. Still University offers programs with a sports management focus. One of the main programs available is a Master of Science (MS) in Athletic Training. Students spend two years in the program and do practicums in several different semesters. Those practicums allow them to work with clients and put their skills into action. The athletic training program includes Foundations of Tissue Healing, Traumatic Brain Injury in Sport, Research Methods and Design, Human Anatomy I and II and other courses.
Though the master’s program requires on-campus work, the university’s Doctorate in Athletic Training is an online program. It looks at some of the innovations in the athletic training field, how traumatic brain injuries can affect athletes, the best rehabilitation methods and the best ways of treating different injuries. This program features both a foundation or core and electives for students. Foundation classes include Health Information Technology, Patient-Oriented Outcomes and Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. Students can choose to focus on rehabilitation or orthopedics and take courses from either track. The program allows students to earn one or more certificates too.
Another program that might appeal to students with an interest in sports management is the university’s Master of Health Administration (MHA). Students can choose an emphasis area such as human resource management, quality and safety in health care, or operations management. They will take some classes from an emphasis area and required courses in the first year. The second-year includes advanced courses and a capstone. Classes included Managing Human Resources, Healthcare Information Systems, Population Health Management, and Healthcare Strategic Planning and Marketing.
With the university’s certificate programs, students can take a detailed look at a field they don’t study in a degree program. One certificate is in neurology and concussion. It looks at how athletes can suffer traumatic brain injuries and concussions through the sports they play. The graduate certificate in rehabilitation helps students learn about the common treatments that professionals use and how they identify injuries through courses such as Assessment of Movement Dysfunction and Foundations of Tissue Healing. Also available are graduate certificates in clinical decision making in athletic training and orthopedics.
About A.T. Still University
A.T. Still University is a private university that offers certificate and degree programs for doctoral and graduate students. Established in 1892 as the American School of Osteopathy, it was the first medical school in the world to focus on osteopathy. It became the A.T. Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1922 and merge with the Kirksville Osteopathy College two years later. Some of the other names that it used include the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery and the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. The college became A.T. Still University or ATSU in 2003. ATSU now has two main campuses: one in Missouri and one in Arizona. Both campuses offer the same programs, some of which are available online too. The two campuses have a combined total of seven colleges that allow students to study subjects in health sciences and medicine, including athletic training, oral health, and osteopathic medicine.
A.T. Still University Accreditation Details
ATSU has regional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which took over the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS) that once granted the university accreditation. This gives students the chance to get loans and other financial aid when they use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The university also has accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
A.T. Still University Application Requirements
The requirements for students applying to the athletic training program include a bachelor’s degree, athletic training certification and a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Students can apply without certification as long as they meet all the requirements needed to get a certificate. The university’s rolling admissions policy means that students can apply whenever they want as long as the program still has space. In addition to an application, ATSU also requires two letters of reference from a health care professional and an employer or academic reference, a GRE score, two copies of their resumes and their college transcripts as well as an application fee.
Students applying to the MHA program need to pay an application fee when they apply online. This program requires a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a bachelor’s degree from a college or university that has regional accreditation. Students need to submit an essay with the application and a copy of their resume. The university asks that students have some healthcare administration experience and that they meet its technology requirements.
ATSU looks for doctoral students who have strong skills and backgrounds in athletic training, kinesiology and sports management. Students can apply once they have a master’s degree and submit transcripts to show what classes they took. They need to be proficient in English and have some type of certification such as a certificate from the Board of Certification or the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association. The university asks for a copy of the student’s license, a GPA of 3.0 or higher and two letters of recommendation. Students should also send in their transcripts and a GRE score. Those chosen for the program will also be subject to a phone interview.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Athletic training majors at ATSU pay $1,150 in fees each year and a tuition rate of $20,434. Both the university’s doctoral and certificate programs charge a flat rate of $553 per credit hour and a small number of fees. In the university’s MHA program, students pay $697 per credit hour and a fee of $32 for each credit that they take.
Enrollment Services at ATSU can help students complete the FAFSA and learn about their financial aid packages. Endowed scholarships are available for MHA and athletic training students and can give them up to $5,000 each year per prize. Work-study also goes to many graduate and doctoral students. They can accept different jobs with the university and work just a few hours a week. Both alternative/private student loans and federal loans are available too. A.T. Still University encourages students to use all the financial aid that is available to them in one of the sports management and athletic training programs.
