Five App State Tracks Into Sports Management

At Holmes Center, the Beaver College of Health Sciences led by Dr. Marie Huff awards the 122-credit Recreation Management BS for Appalachian State University undergrads seeking CPRP certification in four specializations: Commercial Recreation, Tourism Management, Park Management, or Outdoor Experiential Education.
Chaired by Dr. Travis Triplett, the Exercise Science BS follows a 122-credit curriculum with three Clinical Exercise Physiology, Strength & Conditioning, and Sports Science & Coaching options at a 16:1 teaching ratio. Further, the Cratis B. Williams Graduate School’s Exercise Science MS under Dr. Kym Fasczewski integrates 50 internship hours and thesis work into 36 credits like Sports Performance.
Starting May 2020, a 65-credit, two-year Athletic Training MS directed by Dr. Ashley Goodman will admit Leon Levine Hall cohorts with Orthopedic Clinic practice and rotations in the 18 NCAA Division I teams. The Off-Campus MBA in Management Concentration also blends 36 AACSB-accredited credits of online Blackboard courses with two Hickory sessions and business practica, such as with the Carolina Panthers.
About Appalachian State University
Appalachian State University originated on September 1, 1899, when Dr. Blanford B. Dougherty welcomed an inaugural class of 53 into three secondary grades at Watauga Academy. Four years later, Rep. W.C. Newland introduced a Legislature bill to make it the Appalachian Training School for Teachers.
In 1921, the first two-year degree was awarded at 3,333 feet above sea level at its Sanford Mall campus. Bachelor of Arts programs quickly followed as it became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929.
Accredited in 1939, Appalachian started the South’s first graduate education curriculum in 1948. During Dr. William H. Plemmons’ tenure, it was welcomed into the UNC System in 1967 as Appalachian State University. By 2001, App State was being selected for TIME Magazine’s College of the Year Award. The Beaver College of Health Sciences debuted in 2010 with two sports-related departments. Budgeting $53.59 million, ASU now employs 1,330 faculty training 19,108 Mountaineers from 17 countries online and on-site with 400+ clubs like Climbing Coalition. The U.S. News & World Report ranked Appalachian the South’s eighth best university, 20th top value, fifth-best for vets college, and second most innovative school for 2019.
Appalachian State University Accreditation Details
On December 9, 2013, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees voted to reaffirm Appalachian State University for Level V accreditation compliance and a good Quality Enhancement Plan under its seventh Chancellor, Dr. Sheri Everts, who earned a Climate Leadership Award from Second Nature. Located 294 miles south via Route 321 in Decatur, Georgia, this 11-state regional accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to evaluate ASU’s 176 baccalaureate and 42 graduate majors. Particularly, the Department of Health & Exercise Science is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) through 2022. The Recreation Management BS was approved by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (COAPRT) in September 2012. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) also accredited Walker College in June 2018.
Appalachian State University Application Requirements
Ascending into Appalachian State University is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s since just 9,826 of the 14,049 Fall 2017 applicants were okayed for 70 percent acceptance. First-year Mountaineers seeking the Recreation Management BS must meet UNC System standards in high school education. This includes six Language units, four Math units, and three Science units. The Class of 2021 had a cumulative GPA range of 2.7 to 3.5. Weighted GPAs for Advanced Placement credits average 3.94. Freshmen present a median 1210 SAT and 25 ACT mark. Test-optional admission is permissible with 30+ accredited credits transferred. Articulation agreements exist for colleges like Carteret, Asheville-Buncombe, and Forsyth Tech with GPAs above 2.25. The Cratis D. Williams Graduate School seeks minimum 2.5 GPAs during bachelor’s study. Exercise Science MS entrants need prerequisites in Human Anatomy, Biomechanics, and Physiology. The Athletic Training MS mandates 40+ observation hours with certified professionals. GRE scores in the 25th percentile are strongly preferred. Master of Business Administration cohorts present an average 550 GMAT score too.
Appalachian State University set first-year deadlines of November 1st and February 1st. Hopeful Recreation Management BS transfers have until October 15th for Spring and February 15th for Fall. MBA in Management review dates are November 1st, April 1st, and July 1st. The Exercise Science MS considers candidates from February 1st to July 1st. Apply before February 1, 2019 for the first Athletic Training MS session in 2020. Accordingly, log into the MyMountaineer portal to complete the ASU Application and $65 fee by Visa or Mastercard. Official transcripts go to Box 32004 at 287 Rivers Street in Boone, NC 28608. School electronic testing codes are 5010 (SAT/GRE) and 3062 (ACT). Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, Appalachian State University has charged full-time North Carolina undergrads $2,121 per term. Non-resident Recreation Management BS majors pay $9,524 each semester. Budget for the $1,398 university fee, $144 textbook rental fee, $276 parking fee, and $162 health service fee. Living at the Boone campus’ dorms like Panhellenic Hall adds $2,235 to $2,700 by semester. Premium meal plans for Central Dining Hall are $1,917. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals around $14,836 in-state and $29,643 out-of-state. The Cratis D. Williams Graduate School bills North Carolinians $2,419 and non-residents $9,135 each term full-time. Studying part-time incurs $605 to $2,749 per course. Online MBA in Management cohorts specifically spend $266 in-state and $925 out-of-state per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Student Financial Aid in John E. Thomas Hall gifts $58.66 million total for 47 percent of ASU Mountaineers to reach median assistance of $7,592. University funds include the W.H. Plemmons Leadership Scholarship, Diversity Scholarship, Herbert W. Wey Scholarship, Josephus Daniels Scholarship, Margaret I. McIntyre Scholarship, Staff Senate Scholarship, Harry & Mary Meinhardt Memorial Scholarship, Nancy H. Jolly Scholarship, Steve & Judy James Scholarship, and Reich Scholarship. The Chancellor’s Scholars Program covers eight tuition semesters if GPAs above 3.45 are maintained. Since 1998, the on-campus Recreation Management Association has bestowed two $1,000 scholarships annually. FAFSA applications coded 002906 determine Federal Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, Stafford Loan, and Work-Study coverage. Graduate assistantship positions, such as the Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center, waive 9-12 credits each term. The Community Foundation of North Carolina lists 75+ opportunities like the Beacon Rural America Scholarship and Crumley Roberts Founder’s Scholarship.
