Alderson Broaddus University was initially established in 1871 by Baptist ministers and named to honor the Civil War’s revered Rev. William Francis Ferguson Broaddus. By 1926, financial hardship caused the college to merge with Alderson Academy, which honored the lay work of Emma C. Alderson. Alderson Broaddus made history in 1945 by forming West Virginia’s first radiography program. Endowed for $17.7 million, ABU now educates 1,100 Battlers as a private, nonprofit liberal arts school of the American Baptist Churches USA. Placed on probation in June 2017, Alderson Broaddus University holds regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA). Led by President James Barry, ABU is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, West Virginia Department of Education, and Council of Independent Colleges (CIC).
